In our family, all of the men know how to play chess. I think it started with an older male cousin teaching my youngest brother, Kyle. when he was eight years old. My older brother had learned from another family member and maybe my dad always knew how to play. At family parties, the chess board mysteriously appeared. I never remembered where it came from or who pulled it out of its secret hiding place, but it always made a surprise appearance at the kitchen table with two males strategically battling for the winning title. The women in our family witnessed highlights of the head-to-head game, while they cleaned off the dining room table and straightened the kitchen.

Our family actually collected many chess sets throughout the years. I know there is a very old wooden set that is still at my parents’ house. My youngest brother has multiple sets. I recall my mom bought him one made of glass, and another made of marble. I bought him a wooden set and board made in Dubrovnik, when I visit there at age seventeen. By now he probably has an entire closet in his house filled with his collection of chess sets.

A few months ago, at a family party, Kyle taught my youngest niece how to play the game. I was at a volleyball tournament with Briella, so I did not witness it but I am told my niece put up a good fight for a rookie. Since that initial game, she has been perfecting her chess techniques by playing against her mother and her older brother. Apparently she’s memorized how all the pieces move and watches videos on various chess strategies, so she can be more competitive.

By her nature, she is a fierce competitor. She’s the youngest of four and has learned to stand on her own two feet, while speaking her truth. I am always amazed at the insightful snippets of wisdom she shares. She is an old soul; this isn’t her first rodeo. This past July, my brother had a family gathering at his house. My youngest niece asked me to play chess. I told her I didn’t know how to play the game.”Did anyone teach you the game?” she asked. I shook my head from side to side and she frowned. “Let’s go. I’m teaching you,” she insisted as she placed the rooks on the board. “I started teaching Nana how to play last week,”she said. My mother walked by and verbally concurred that she has indeed been learning the game.

After my niece arranged all the pieces in their correct spots on the board, she named each piece and then explained how it moved. Then we started to play but it wasn’t a regular competitive game. We played as though she were a teacher and I was her student. When I placed my hand on a piece she made me explain why I wanted to move it and where I wanted to move it. Then she used her little fingers to show me how her pieces could possibly impact mine by jumping them or taking them. I felt like a child learning a skill from a master. It was honestly a little unsettling for me. I am usually teaching her things about butterflies, plants, insects and new dance moves because we always have dance-offs. I had to check my ego, which kept reminding me a child was teaching me an adult game. She was patient and took her time thoroughly explaining moves and possible scenarios. In hindsight, she was probably better than some of my grammar school teachers…especially the ones that taught math.

The game ended pretty quickly because I couldn’t remember all the ways the pieces moved. I heard her say,”Checkmate”and then she took my king off the board. I was surprised at how quickly it ended based on the lengthy games I had witnessed in my parents’ kitchen while growing up. “It’s ok. You’ll get better if we keep practicing.” she sad patting me on the back. At that point I realized this was a true lesson in humility–one old soul assisting another. It hit me as I sat there placing the pieces back in their box. The younger ones have the right programming. I never learned to play chess in my family because none of the men took the time to teach me or any of the women. It was a game they kept for themselves. My eight-year-old niece was the one to teach me and my seventy-eight-year-old mother. This is an iconic time. Not only is she a transmuter of energy in family lines because she is ending the old pattern and integrating the women but she is also connector because she is bringing all the females together. This is very special and I suspect many of my readers are seeing this too in their own family lines. The beautiful part is that they are here because we cleared the way for these special souls to be here, now. We did the inner work and that cleared the path for them and they are clearing for the generation that comes after all of us. The matriarch energy is here and has been here but it is unfolding beautifully because all of these little connectors are bringing them together. Always remember who you are and why you are here!

Namaste,
