We love the Mexican traditions of #Diadelosmuertos. It is a beautiful way to honor our loved ones that are no longer with us in physical form but are always connected to us energetically. This past summer, our best pal, Sampson crossed over. This is the first time I have written about it because I it has taken me quite a while to heal from missing his physical presence.

We are blessed by those soul who join us in this life. But we are also blessed when they cross over. Though they are no longer with us physically, they are always connected to us spiritedly. They can be with us to help us any time we need them. Death is a change in form because the soul is eternal. We never lose those we love. We are always connected; it’s a soul thing.
Namaste,

I have written about clairvoyance before in reference to humans opening their third eyes and using their psychic senses to see the truth in things and non-physical energy. Animals can also be clairvoyant and I had a very good reminder of this recently. I don’t usually make house calls but a client of mine brought something to my attention and I knew I needed to make an exception and visit someone’s home.

A client named Linda, came for a session and during that time, she mentioned concerns about her dog, Morgan that would not go into the yard at night. Morgan also had a friend next door a two-year old husky named Milo. He wouldn’t go into the yard at night either but he also refused to leave his patio area. As Linda told me this story, I knew that Milo was having a spirit issue in the yard and I also knew that I needed to visit him at his home and get a better idea of what he was seeing. I asked Linda if I could stop by and meet the dogs and see Milo’s yard. She agreed and we set a time that weekend for me to visit.

I stopped by on Sunday morning, after the gym. When I arrived at Linda’s home, a little Beagle head popped up and through the curtains like a fish line bobber. The dog’s mouth was open and it looked like she was smiling at me. It was the happy face of my new best buddy, Morgan. I met Linda and Morgan in their backyard.

As soon as they exited the house, Morgan danced circles of excitement around me like at little elf. I loved her energy; she was perhaps the happiest dog I had ever met. Then she pranced around the different areas of her yard showing me her favorite spots, while Linda narrated for her. Next, she ran up and down the chain-linked fence barking. Linda said she was calling her buddy, Milo, who lived next door

Within a minute of her barking, a beautiful white husky with crystal blue eyes, peered through his bay window and watched with his tail wagging. His owner, Nannette, let him into the yard and he bounded to the fence. Milo jumped up and let us pet him and I could feel he was an incredibly sensitive animal. He started whining and hoping on his back legs to get over the fence, so he could play with us. I asked his owner if we could come over and she agreed.

We walked into the yard and Milo stayed on the patio staring forward. I looked up and noticed a small blue metal shed with a middle-aged man in spirit standing to the right. I knew Milo could see the man. Morgan and I kept walking forward. “See this is exactly what he does. For the last two months, he won’t walk past the patio. I have to take him on the leash to get him into the yard,” Nannette said.

“Who’s the man in spirit connected to the house that had an alcohol issue?” I asked. Nannette said she did not know because she had only lived there for six years. “He owned the house at one time and is very connected to it. This home is a place of comfort for him,” I said.

Linda said that she remembered him and his name was Ed. She said that he would hide and drink in the shed because his wife did not like him drinking. Ed said that one night when Nannette was throwing the ball to Milo, it landed right next to him and Milo got scared and never went into the yard again. He apologized for scaring Milo. I relayed this information to Linda and Nannette and both women got a better understanding of what had been happening

I told Ed he needed to cross to the spirit world and it was time for him to move on. I explained that there would be people waiting for him there. Just then an elderly woman in spirit appeared to his left; she was his mother. Ed immediately recognized her and the two hugged. She didn’t say a word. I sent both of them in a tunnel of light across the Earth grid to the spirit realm. Then I asked Nannette if she had some sage for smudging. What happened next was just short of amazing.

Nannette lit the sage and I walked through the yard with my wingman, Milo. We smudged the whole yard. Then we smudged the outside of the blue shed. I asked Nannette if we could open the shed and clear the energy. She agreed and noted that she had never opened it in the six years she had lived there. When we pulled the doors back, we found a shed full of Ed’s tools and other belongings. Not only was the home a place of comfort, but Ed still had an energetic connection to the contents in the shed. I walked through the shed with the sage and released all imprints with Milo by my side the whole time.

We had solved the mystery of why Milo would not go into the yard and Milo had helped identify a spirit that needed to cross. A couple of weeks later, I checked in with Linda and it was business as usual for Milo and Morgan. They were back playing and running in their yards. The next time your pet stares at something that seems invisible, take notice. It could be a loved one or lost spirit visiting. Just like humans, some animals are born at a very high frequency and can see and feel spirits. Pay attention to what your pets show you!

Namaste,

When we think of grief, it’s usually in human terms. We may not always consider grief as it applies to animals. But pets often grieve the losses of their companions. They may not be able to completely verbalize what they’re feeling, but their actions and body language tell us what they’re experiencing. As pet owners, we need to recognize animal grief and provide support and stimulation for our furry companions as they navigate through loss.

Recently, our family experienced the physical passing of our fifteen-year-old Labrador Retriever, Poodie. Although the loss was difficult for us, our three-year-old white Shepherd, Sampson, struggled more than anyone in the family. As soon as the veterinarian left our house the day Poodie died, Sampson ran upstairs and stayed under our bed for the duration of the night. Over the next week, he withdrew from the family and stayed upstairs under the bed, only making the trek downstairs to eat or go out to the bathroom. He didn’t play, snuggle, or partake in any of his usual activities.

The following week, we decided to create a new stimulating routine for Sampson. We took him for walks twice a day and for a daily car ride. Usually his car ride destination was Papa and Nana’s house a few miles away, so he could play with his best friend, a yellow Labrador named Simon. Within two weeks of Poodie’s passing, Sampson adjusted to his new schedule with bright eyes and an upright tail. He played ball in the yard daily and stayed downstairs in the den all day. The only time he went upstairs was at night for bed.

Exactly one month after Poodie’s passing, Simon died of cancer–a disease he took on for his best friend, Kyle. He had been fighting it for over a year but his body couldn’t hold on any longer. We hesitated to take Sampson over Nana and Papa’s after Simon’s death because we feared he might withdraw the way he did with Poodie’s passing. So we waited a couple of weeks to bring him over.

Yesterday, we drove over to Papa and Nana’s for the first time since Simon’s physical death. Sampson bounded up the front lawn to the door. But Simon wasn’t there to greet him this time. Papa opened the door and Sampson tore through the house both upstairs and downstairs searching for his buddy. Then he darted out the back door and scurried all over the yard sniffing each step. After he scoured the yard, he jumped up on the porch, and let out a loud whine. He looked up at me with his big amber eyes and whimpered a few times. I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a big hug.

We walked in the house as Sampson trotted through the kitchen and sat down right where Simon’s bowls of water used to be. Then he rose and walked into hallway and sniffed the marble foyer–the last place in the house where Simon rested before he died. Sampson stretched himself out in the foyer and stayed there for the duration of the visit.

As we drove home last night, Sampson seemed a bit sad, as he rested his head over the back seat. But, when we got home, he didn’t run upstairs to hide under the bed. He stayed in the den and we gave him lots of rubs on his belly and hugs. I’m sure it will take a few visits to Papa and Nana’s house, before Sampson gets use to not seeing Simon. But his response to Simon’s passing was much better than his response to Poodie’s passing.

Grief comes in many forms and affects everyone including pets. When our pets encounter grief, we can help them by providing love, support, stimulation, and perhaps a new routine. Our pets are always there to love and support us. In times of their grief, we may need to give them a little more love and support than usual.

Love and light,
Anysia

Sometimes in this life, we’re faced with difficult decisions regarding our pets. We may feel torn or unsure about our choices. But we always have help on the other side. When the time comes for our pets to transition, we can ask passed-on loved ones to help our pets cross.

Two weeks ago, our fifteen-year-old Labrador Retriever, Poodie, had a real health crisis. She lost the ability to use her back legs a few months earlier. A friend let us borrow a dogie cart, but her geriatric muscles couldn’t support her body very well. She also had a bladder cyst issue that had built up resistance to several antibiotics, which ultimately led to her physical demise. Since she was too old to survive surgery, and without antibiotics to help her weak body fight off infection, we were faced with a difficult decision.

I gave her energy daily to help her clear any patterns or energetic blocks that she was ready to release, but the body was wearing out. I could feel her will to live weakening. I prayed that she would pass in her sleep, so our decision would be easier on us, but that did not happen. Two days before she died, Poodie was up most of the night. Even with a pain medication, she was still uncomfortable. We could see a look of defeat in her big brown eyes. We knew it was time.

I called the veterinarian the next morning with a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes and made the appointment to have put to sleep at our home. As a family, we felt it was better to help her pass then to watch her die a very pain-filled death. The veterinarian could not come to the house until the next morning. During her last night in our home, I slept next to her and gave her healing energy most of the night. I knew there wasn’t much we could do for the physical body, but I had hoped to help her release any emotional or spiritual imprints, so she didn’t carry them in her soul to the other side. She rested and let the energy run through her body. Many times, she licked my hands validating that she could feel the vibrational energy. I hugged her warm furry body and listened to her breath as she slept.

The following morning, my husband had an early meeting that he could not get out of but planned to leave the office right after his meeting. We felt it was best to send our son to school. So ironically, Poodie’s life had begun with me bringing her home from work when she was just under a year old. She was the pet of a co-worker’s uncle. Apparently Poodie didn’t get along with the other animals in the house, so the man punished her by keeping her in a cage all the time and not feeding her. He was going to give her to a shelter, but I brought her home with me that day without so much as a collar or any other belongings–just a rope tied around her neck that the man used as a leash. I don’t think it was a coincidence that her transition to the other side would include only the two of us.

I wanted a peaceful transition for her, so I lit candles in the den, played soft music, and gave her a gentle massage with lavender oil. I sat next to her at the end of her bed with her head in my lap caressing her increasingly graying coat. As I stroked her head, I recalled all the fun times we shared. The walks in the park, ball throwing, swims in the pool, kisses and hugs. I thanked her for coming to us and being part of our family. I thanked her for always protecting us and staying longer than her body would have allowed and for being a great friend to me. I invited her to visit us in spirit form and asked her to send me a sign–a green hummingbird–when she got to the other side. She listened with her ears and eyes, as her old body peacefully relaxed each muscle.

As she slept quietly on her bed, I called to some of my passed-on relatives and pets to help her cross. My maternal grandmother, Nanny, and Timber, our first dog, who had been good friends with Poodie, arrived by her side. Nanny was on the left side and Timber sat on the right. Both waited patiently for the veterinarian’s arrival. I thanked them for coming and asked them to give me strength. A deep sense of peace filled me and I knew everything would be fine.

When the veterinarian arrived, Poodie was fast asleep. She woke as he was leaning toward her with the needle. She gave him a weak growl and then rested her head on my lap. I kept telling her that it was okay to go as I caressed the top of her head. Her passing was peaceful in the comfort of her own home. Once her spirit disconnected from her body, she was guided to the other side by those she knew.

A few nights ago, my nine-year-old son asked how we can know that Poodie isn’t waiting around on Earth because she didn’t die a natural death? “When God wants someone, they die and God is ready for them but that didn’t happen with Poodie. We helped her,” he said. “So how do we know she’s with God”? I told him that Nanny and Timber helped Poodie cross over, so she wouldn’t get lost. Plus, we had a sign from her a few days after she passed– a green hummingbird drinking nectar from the flowering plum tree, which was her favorite place to sit and relax in our backyard.

Sometimes I’m asked if pets can see and sense spirits. Often people talk about their cats starring at something that is not visible to the human eye( or most human eyes). Others make mention of their dogs barking and sometimes chasing after someone or something that cannot be seen.

Pets are like children in many ways. They’re pure souls and love us unconditionally. On a spiritual level, they’re not conditioned by society and its norms, so they see what is before them with open eyes. This includes seeing and perceiving spiritual energy. Pets are generally clairvoyant, although they may perceive spiritual energy in a variety of ways. They might see it and follow it with their eyes. They may hear the spirits with their clairaudience, or they may smell the energy with their clairscent abilities.

My dog, Sampson, a three-year-old white Shepherd, yellow Labrador mix sees spirits often. After we put the kids down for the night and we relax in the den, I often shut down my mediumship abilities and settle myself. But sometimes an unexpected guest shows up right before I clear the house. Sampson is the first household member to perceive the visitor and immediately greets our guest with a deep growl, as the fluffy white hair on his back stands straight up. Next, he runs into the dining room barking ferociously. At that point, my husband glances over at me and says, “Looks like you’ve got some work to do tonight.” We both chuckle as I rise from the couch and make my way into the dining room. I meet a spirit of a young man around age seventeen standing against the wall, while Sam continues to bark and gnash his teeth. The young man wants to get a message to his mother before he crosses over. I explain that I don’t seek out strangers but if I am meant to deliver the message, a connection will be made with a mutual party that can help facilitate the information to his mother.

Next, I clear the energy of the house including the young male spirit. I watch as his spirit soars high above the house enveloped in a glowing white energy rising high into the heavens. The energy in the house feels relaxed and peaceful–filled with warm glowing light. I return to the den and settle on the couch once more. Sam rests quietly on his pillow under my feet. I give him a big hug and thank him for being on alert, even when I’m not.

Our pets can sense spirits. So the next time your cat looks at the wall and darts his eyes back and forth like he’s watching a ping pong match or your dog chases after something that you can’t see, take time to reward and thank him. He’s protecting and alerting you to the energy in your space even if that energy is intangible to you.

Bright blessings,

I have mentioned pets as spiritual beings a couple of times on this blog. In one posting entitled, Do Pets Have Souls?, I discussed the souls of pets and their places in the afterlife. Often during client healing sessions, I see all types of pets from the traditional dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and birds to the more obscure turtles, iguanas, and even some farm animals. The energies of these animals present themselves to verify their connections to their former human owners even after the physical existence. The bonds between humans and their pets are strong and sometimes these compassionate animals do something extraordinary; they absorb the illnesses of their humans, so their owners do not have to experience the physical suffering or so that their humans can spend more time on the Earth.

Last year, my youngest brother, Kyle battled testicular cancer and won. He received chemotherapy treatments at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Over the course of four rounds of chemotherapy, he remained in New York for a full week during each round. When he returned home, Kyle spent most of the following week in his bedroom, recovering and battling nausea. As he regained his strength, his dog, Simon, an eight-year-old spunky yellow Labrador Retriever, sat at the end of his bed until Kyle was well enough to resume his normal routine. Throughout all four rounds of chemotherapy, the dog remained by Kyle’s side. After his rounds of treatment, Kyle endured a lymph-node removal surgery, in which the doctor’s extracted eighty-two lymph nodes from his groin area up through to his lungs. The recovery was painful and Kyle couldn’t eat solids. He spent almost seven days in the hospital. When he returned, Simon was once again next to his bed until his master recovered.

I had a premonition this past November that my brother would once again have cancer in March of 2011 because although he had beat it physically, he had not fixed the root cause of his disease. My brother had a feeling that he would get cancer again, as well. He stressed often about it, though his scans and blood work came back clean each month he could not shake the feeling that the cancer was biting at his heals, again.

In March of this year, Kyle got his scans and they came back clean. But Simon was not as lucky as Kyle. Simon had an issue and he went to the veterinarian for some testing. They found that Simon had cancer–the same type of cancer that Kyle had. The cancer had spread from his groin area through the stomach and up to his lungs–the same tumor pattern as Kyle had. The doctors determined that they could keep him comfortable, but because it has spread to his lungs, Simon would eventually pass from the disease. How does a completely healthy dog develop the same exact type of cancer as his owner? He had gone to the vet 4 months earlier for his annual exam and blood work. There were never any signs of the disease. Yet he had a baseball size tumor in his groin and cancer straight to through his lungs. The veterinarian did not have a really logical explanation for the disease. Our explanation is that the dog had in fact absorbed the disease, so my brother could live longer on the Earth.

As soon as I heard the news of Simon’s illness, I called Kyle. He was very emotional about it and knew that the dog had taken the illness on for him. We discussed ways to keep Simon comfortable, which included weekly treatments. Kyle, a Reiki Master, agreed to give Simon weekly Reiki sessions. He felt it was the least he could do to repay Simon for such a compassionate act. I witnessed a session in which Simon rested comfortably, as Kyle gently swept his hands across Simon’s chest massive chest–his breathes were deep and relaxed.

Simon doesn’t display and visible signs of the disease. His eyes are bright and his coat shines in the sun, as he continues to run about the yard fetching after tennis balls and any other toys we throw to him. I think there will come a time this fall when he will grow weaker and feel the illness. But for now, we enjoy our time with him and give him lots of love and affection.

Our pets are companions and sometimes they make the ultimate sacrifice for us. We can learn the deepest sense of compassion from them. Maybe God created them so we can learn how to be selfless. One thing is for sure, they make our lives comfortable. They brighten our days, comfort us when we’re lonely, and warm our hearts. Pets are pure love and we should be grateful for them because they give so much more than they take in life.

Bright blessings,

This question comes up a lot. People always wonder if a pet that passed-on has gone to heaven. I have often seen pets come up with their former human companions–who are now in spirit form. I have encountered the spirits of dogs, cats, birds, and a host of reptiles as well.

I used to volunteer at the Associated Humane Societies Tinton Falls location. For two years, I visited the shelter every Thursday and gave Reiki to the cats, dogs, bunnies, and ferrets. It was a wonderful lesson in compassion because the animals were so loving and grateful to be helped. As I worked on the animals, I would get images of where they had been before they wound up in the shelter. I could see the conditions the animals were exposed to including those involving neglect and abuse. Though they could not verbalize, the animals told stories with the images and their emotions which they shared in the healing sessions.

Early on in my shelter work, I met a dog named Blue. He was a blue Doberman Pinscher. His shirt-haired coat was a beautiful shade of gray-blue. Although he was less than two-years-old, his paws were immense–an indication of his tremendous growth potential. His most striking feature was his icy blue eye color–like a clean deep ocean–which gave his eyes a human quality. I nicknamed him Gentle Giant for though he had a large frame, he had the personality of an affectionate little lap dog.

The shelter manager said Blue was turned in because he tried to bite his owner. But, I got a very different impression when I worked on the Gentle Giant. I saw his former owner trying to make the dog aggressive by taunting him with a stick. Blue just sat there with his head cocked to the side as if confused. I got the impression his owner wanted a large breed dog and preferred an aggressive temperament. But the Gentle Giant didn’t have the makings of an aggressive disposition, so he was turned into the shelter.

At the advice of my doctor, I stopped volunteering at the shelter when I was seven months pregnant with my daughter. I had been scratched by one of the cats and my doctor was concerned about me contracting Toxoplasmosis. I deep sadness resonated in me as I walked through the shelter on my last day. But I continued to send distance energy to the animals, even though I could not be there physically.

A couple of months ago, I was doing a distance healing session on someone. I had soft music playing on the Pandora radio station. Toward the end of the session, I saw images of Blue, Gentle Giant. He was running in a lush green field and his silvery coat glistened in the bright sun. He sat in front of me for a moment and then ran off. I opened my eyes and the song on the Pandora station was Vangelis’ – Remembering Blue. I sat in my chair and sent him thoughts of gratitude and love for his sweet visit. “Yes”, pets have souls (even those without human owners) and “Yes”, their souls live-on, just like those of their human counterparts.

Love and light,
